Durham Arts Place LGBTQ Call for Artist

Love/Hate, Private/Public, Inside/Outside, Gay/Straight

The Durham Arts Place announces a call for artwork from self-identified LGBTQ artists for an art exhibit showcasing the artistic strength of the LGBTQ community in North Carolina.  This exhibit is being held during the North Carolina Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, as a venue to continue and expand conversations begun by the film festival, and continues through the week of the North Carolina Pride Festival.  Artworks can be two or three dimensional and cannot exceed 36” in width and 60” in height.  The show will be on view at the Durham Arts Place Upstairs Gallery from August 10th through September 30th.

This is a juried show.  Selections will be made by the curators: Dan Ellison, Lindsay Gordon, and Jennie Carlisle.  Jpeg images of artwork and the filled entry form must be submitted via e-mail to by midnight on July 23rd

This show will feature mostly two-dimensional works of art; a very limited number of three-dimensional works may also be accepted.  Artists must self-identify as LGBTQ and must have lived in North Carolina during the past five years.  Works must be original and by the submitting artist.  No copies, mechanical reproductions, molds, or kit work will be accepted.  All work cannot exceed 36” in width and 60” in height, and cannot weigh more than 75 lbs.  The Durham Arts Place reserves the right to exclude work due to size or special requirements.  All two-dimensional work must be dry, wired, and ready to hang.  No clip frames or alligator hangers.  Entries must be hand delivered.  If your work is accepted into the show you must submit an artist statement, no longer than one page typed, single spaced, by August 1st.  Artwork submitted on behalf of an artist requires written and signed authorization from the artist.

The artist is required to donate 25% of any sales to the NC Gay and Lesbian Film Festival.  The artist will handle all sales directly.  If a work is not for sale please indicate with NFS value in the appropriate space on the entry form.

The show is open to all living LBGTQ artists who have resided in North Carolina during the past five years.  A maximum of two works of two-dimensional medium, per artist, may be submitted.  All work must be the submitting artist’s original work. 

All entries will be handled with the best care possible, but the Durham Arts Place is not responsible for loss or damage of any cause. By entering into this show, the artist agrees to abide by all rules and regulations as set by exhibition guidelines.

All work must be properly prepared for exhibition (includes framing and wiring).  Artists must abide by all Durham Arts Place policies as posted.  Submission of work gives the Durham Arts Place permission to use images of work for promotional purposes.
